Anthropic Introduces 'Claude for Legal': Deep MCP Integrations with iManage, Relativity, and CoCounsel

In mid-May 2026, Anthropic announced a major expansion of its business automation offerings with the official launch of Claude for Legal. Far from a basic standalone chatbot, Claude for Legal functions as a highly secure, integrated "orchestration layer" designed to embed Claude’s intelligence directly into the established daily software stack of law firms and corporate legal departments.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) Revolution

At the core of Claude for Legal is the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Anthropic has released over 20 pre-built legal connectors that allow Claude to interface seamlessly with existing document storage and analysis platforms.

This enables legal teams to fetch context, analyze documents, and draft responses directly within their core tools, with no copy-pasting required:

  • iManage & NetDocuments (DMS): Claude now connects to governed document stores, respecting internal firewalls, client permissions, and ethical walls to safeguard sensitive firm data.
  • Relativity & Everlaw (eDiscovery): The new integrations allow corporate teams to govern access, setup workspace schemas, and run high-volume eDiscovery filters directly from natural-language queries.
  • Thomson Reuters CoCounsel (Research): Through a strategic partnership with Thomson Reuters, Claude now has a direct bridge to CoCounsel Legal, which pulls citation-grade, authoritative research directly from Westlaw and Practical Law.

Dedicated Practice-Area Plugins

Alongside integrations, Claude for Legal introduces 12 specialized practice-area plugins. These are customized workspaces designed to automate high-frequency, complex legal workflows under direct human supervision:

  1. Drafting & Review: Plugins for Commercial Agreements, Corporate Transactions, Employment, IP, and Litigation drafting.
  2. Governance & Compliance: Privacy, Regulatory updates, and AI Act compliance registers (such as tracking prohibited or high-risk EU AI Act classifications).
  3. Educational Support: Specialized learning profiles for law students and legal aid clinics.

Using these plugins, a junior attorney can instruct Claude to review a counterparty's non-disclosure agreement (NDA) against the firm's internal playbook, highlight deviations in red, propose compliant fallback terms, and draft a summary email to business stakeholders—all in under two minutes.

Deep Microsoft 365 and Word Integration

Recognizing that lawyers spend most of their lives in Microsoft Word and Outlook, Anthropic has integrated Claude deeply into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

This allows users to open a document in Word, summon Claude for a contract compliance check, and automatically carry the resulting findings over into Outlook to draft a detailed client advisory message.

Anthropic has structured Claude for Legal with a strong focus on compliance and ethical boundaries:

  • Zero Model Training: Enterprise and Team configurations strictly guarantee that customer data is never used to train or refine Anthropic’s models, ensuring client confidentiality is maintained.
  • Human-in-the-Loop Pedagogy: The system is designed to act as a supportive agent rather than a decision-maker. It surfaces findings, flags drafting gaps, and outlines options, leaving the final legal judgment and approval entirely in the hands of the human attorney.

With this launch, Anthropic has positioned itself as a primary player in the rapidly evolving legal technology sector, proving that vertical specialization combined with open protocols is the key to deep AI adoption.
